Marble

The classic. Soft veins, warm light, and a surface that gets more beautiful as it's lived on.

What it is

Limestone, transformed.

Marble forms when limestone is reshaped by heat and pressure deep in the earth. The veins are minerals that moved through the stone as it formed. No two slabs are alike.

Ours comes from quarries in Italy, Colorado and southern Brazil, and beyond. We've walked many of them ourselves.

It's softer than quartzite, which is exactly why it carves so well. Curves, scallops and stacked edges like the ones at Kira Omakase are where marble shines.

How to care for it

Marble ages. That's the charm.

In Italy, old marble counters wear a soft patina, and people love them for it. If you want it to stay looking new, these habits help.

  1. 01
Watch out for acidsLemon, wine, vinegar and tomato can leave dull marks called etching. Wipe them up quickly and use cutting boards and coasters.
  2. 02
Keep it sealedSealing helps against stains. It doesn't stop etching. Ask us how often to reseal your slab.
  3. 03
Clean gentlyWarm water, a soft cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. No vinegar, bleach or abrasive pads.
  4. 04
Consider a honed finishA matte, honed surface hides etching far better than a polished one. Great for kitchens.
